Plant Based Milks

Plant Based milks are derived from plants, mixed with fats, proteins, phosphates, etc. Similar qualities to dairy based milks.

Oatly is my favorite plant based milk. It is creamy enough to dilute in coffee; it reacts the same as dairy milk in all of my recipes; and the flavor is benign enough and texture is light enough that it is good with cereal.

I've tried a lot of plant based milk including soy, almond, rice, oat, coconut, and hemp. I've also tried different brands of many of them and let me tell you, they are NOT all created equal! I have my favorites in soy and oat, while the others just don't get purchased at all because the flavor is either too strong or the consistency is not widely applicable across recipes and uses.

So, that said, I prefer Silk soy milk and Oatly oat milk above everything else. My first test of plant based milk is to try it in coffee. I have a lot to say on this topic, but I'll leave it at some dissolve and become a creamy addition and others basically curdle or do basically nothing, or they leave a funky, undesirable flavor. Although! I do not have an espresso machine so I cannot speak to that factor other than to say when I order an almond milk latte from a coffee shop with a barista, it is typically quite good so... yeah.

Okay, I exclusively use Oatly at home now and it works really well in my sauce recipes, cornbread, and coffee. My husband prefers the Oat Drink Semi with his cereal so that is what I typically buy.

My daughter prefers the Nut Pods coffee creamers for her coffee since she likes flavors & sweeteners. They have quite a few options and no more than 9 basic plant based ingredients (except the salt) to accomplish the creamy delicious flavors to mix in coffee.
